Ann Arbor’s Schuler Books has gathered a list of holiday books that they recommend for children. This list includes festive literature that will keep children reading throughout the holiday season.

Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree

My all-time favorite of the season!  A classic and a joy to read aloud!  – Christina

Latkes and Applesauce

A cat and dog save this Hunukkah celebration!  A classic that has recently been reissued. – Christina

The Christmas Book Flood

I have always admired the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod where families gift each other with books and settle in to read with a cup of hot chocolate on Christmas eve. Gifting books is such a sign of love! This gorgeous picture book explains the tradition. – Christina

Best Kids’ Hanukkah Jokes Ever!

“Highlights” never lets you down with books that entertain the little ones at family gatherings.  This collection is perfect for kids ages 6-12 with over 500 jokes about Hanukkah and other Jewish holidays.

Snow Foal

A young girl separated from her mother and placed in a foster home in a remote part of England finds a young wild pony that has also become separated from its mother.  As she cares for and nurtures the foal back to health she tries to locate and reunite the two back together.  A very lovely and moving story about family. – Linda

The Storyteller’s Handbook:  52 Illustrations to Inspire Your Own Tales and Adventures

“The Storyteller’s Handbook” is a beautiful wordless picture book. It is full of incredible illustrations that leave it up to the viewer to make up the stories. The possibilities are limitless! – Jessie

Richard Scarry’s The Night Before the Night Before Christmas

My all-time favorite Christmas book. It is a tradition at my house to  read it every Dec. 21st. Mr Frumble has his pickle mobile turned into a Ski Pickle Doo so he can go to the North Pole and help Santa Bear with Christmas. Of course, Mr. Frumble bungles things and tears pages off Santa’s calendar, hilarity ensues. – Meagen

Gilded Girl

Alyssa Colman’s “Gilded Girl” has captured the heart of my daughter.  As she describes it, it’s “a Little Princess” (classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett) meets Harry Potter.  A great read at any age but particularly for 9-12 year olds. -Jen

Song of the Stars – A Christmas Story

A stunning picture book with breathtaking illustrations. All the creatures of the Earth, skies and seas prepare for the birth of The Prince of Peace. With a text that builds in tempo and a star, which grows brighter on every page, it is a beautiful telling of the birth of  Christ. -Meagen
